Ms. Schlick is the uncontested expert on native American basketry of the Columbia Plateau (eastern Washington and Oregon) and she knows and has the admiration of many–perhaps all–of the current weavers. Her book finally puts a face and name on the creators of the baskets and sees them as individual artists. I can’t believe this book has been allowed to go out of print–get it while you can.

This book would get more stars from a craft-oriented person looking to make holiday gifts or centerpieces for family occasions. The title is misleading, in that it does not teach you anything about how to make, wrap and market true gift baskets in the sense that phrase is used by the "gift basket industry."

When I first saw this book, I was skeptical. I’ve put together a few gift baskets, I thought to myself. But when I looked through the photos and read through the Basket Basics, I was hooked. The basket ideas are clever and charming. Most of her ‘baskets’ are not baskets at all: boxes, canisters, laundry baskets, buckets, a bread box and more! In fact, the projects are not traditional directions. [...]

This is a great intermediate to advanced weaver’s book. Although in the back she does cover straight and basic plaiting techniques, this book is for basket weaver’s who are serious about their art and want to add color and/or artistic designs into their baskets. Not only does it teach you how to incorporate geometric designs in your work, it also teaches you how to draft your own artwork designs. The [...]

Really wanted this book to help me make a palm leaf hat. Although the pictures and text are VERY clear, I get about 3/4 of the way through and can’t get any further. I have spent HOURS trying. Still, I did manage to make the roses and fish, so it’s a start.

A wonderfully photographed book! I keep going back and finding new things I missed the first time I looked through it. It is a great book for the artist, basketweaver or someone who just loves beauty and form. The variety of styles, techniques and materials keeps me looking and enjoying. It is basically a picture/reference book and not a guide or instructional book. I’m very glad I bought this book [...]

Flo Hoppe has used excellent illustrations and easy-to-read directions so any novice can be making beautiful round reed baskets in no time!! She is the "queen" of making and teaching round reed techniques. This book has many beautiful baskets and she takes you from the most basic basket on to very advanced ones. As a teacher I would be lost without this book. I have had State Fair winning baskets [...]
