I bought this book for my dad who lives in Tuscon AZ because of all the different species he has there (here in VA we’re blessed with the Ruby-throated little sprites but no others). The pictures in this book are worth it alone. They’re close-up and amazing! It really does give you a good peek into the lives of hummers. Highly recommend especially as a gift book for an overview [...]

Illustrated with stunningly beautiful photography throughout, The Complete Book of Hummingbirds is a detailed guide to well-known species of hummingbirds found throughout the Americas, from Tierra del Fuego to Alaska. An introductory section teaches readers about the life cycle of these tiny yet brilliantly plumaged birds, which are heavily dependent on sugary nectar for their survival; of especial interest are the careful instructions for feeding hummingbirds in one’s backyard (for [...]

In "Mind of the Raven", biologist Bernd Heinrich delves into the behavior of ravens as individuals who might have a conscious choice, as opposed to taking a strictly behavioral ecologist perspective of those behaviors as being simply the results of evolutionary necessity. Heinrich strives to share the insight into the world of ravens which he gained over the course of nearly a decade of studying and interacting with ravens, both [...]

I thought I had the best bird book to identify the birds in my yard until I found this bird guide. It identifies 150 species. There is a quick find index on the inside cover with pictures – a real help! Information is given on feeding, bird houses and how to distinguish between similar species. The colour heads of birds leads you to the pages where complete pictures, range maps, [...]

This superb book was such fun to read and it is packed full of interesting and thought-provoking information. Space prohibits a chapter-by-chapter review so I will list the things in the book that I found very interesting: 1. The plumage color patterns of dawny young shorebirds. 2. DNA hybridization experiments and evolutionary tree of herons. 3. Geese flying in formation to save energy. 4. The use of thermals by a [...]

The saving grace of this bird book is its portable nature. It is small enough to fit in a back pocket when traversing over hill and dell tracking down that Northern Flicker. The cover is also of durable material to weather the dirt, grass, the weather, or whatever you put it through. Those are the good things. The detractors are that when compared to other bird books, the format isn’t [...]

This book has just recently appeared and ranks with the top few Field Guides available. The greatest choice you must make as a learning birder is between guides that use photographs and those that use illustrations to show the birds. Genrerally, illustrations do a better job of detailing the fine points you’ll be looking for and are often more real than real. On the other hand ,when you come across [...]

What makes this different from other bird books is that it not only illustrates and describes each bird but also plays back its song or call using an integrated audio player. Each bird has a number; to hear its song you enter its number on a keypad and press the “play” button. The recordings last up to five seconds or so, depending on how long a bird’s song is. Each [...]

There is a stack of bird books sitting near the window in my living room from which I watch a bird feeder and its visitors every day. I have an ancient 2nd edition of Peterson that really started me watching birds. So, I admit that I have a sentimental attachment to my Peterson Guides. I have hauled Peterson Guides over 4 continents. The National Geographic Guide is a back up [...]

This really useful field guide has great drawings of over 100 species found in neighborhoods in US and Canada. Has a simple system to instantly tell you the region and feeding preferences of birds, in other words, where you are most likely to find them. The drawings are beautiful, colorful and accurate, clearly showing the difference between male and female, and defining markings. I’ve enjoyed mine thoroughly!
